It was quite a surprise to all when it became known that the -President had left Washington this week, on a luntmgcx- ,.. ,, ' ted rather furtively, and tio one save a fay ercd few, had any idea tht Mr. CL-veland was ing-fiway. The party consisted of Cid. Lainont, Secretary Fairchild, lion Joseph Miller aud Captain French. It is reported that u magnificent buck was killed the day followin": their arrival atEomney. The animal was killePby French, wlio narrowly missed Mr Miller in the excite fhent of the mi racnt. It is understood that Senator Kenna will join the party to morrow, and that they will not be back for some little time. From a remark dropped by one of the party, it would appear, that the lives of any newspaper man, who pre sent themselves durinjr this little liutrin;r trip, will be considerably jeopardized. He said ' we dou't want any correspondents prowling about this dijriup?. If the' come wo will not be able to discriminate b.K ween thorn and thvi deer." It is advisable to stay aw.iy, after such a war.iin. Callers at the White House yesterday Were greilly dis appointed that' the usual afternoon recep tion was b t held, owing to the absence of the .President. I he day was a very ijuift one, there being no official cabers. "Oh plague oj this vag;-.ry we arc-in a nice quandary," is a pretty but pathetic little verse, jut now being surig by repub lican clerks in the departments. These faithful soi vent' are in a state of exasperat ing perplexity, over the question whether they cat! jifely go home to vote the rep ub lican ticket. Although the present admin ist ration has issued no irstructions concern ing tl.c matter, there exists among these un'ottunate pcop!e a dread of the conse qucnecs. While in Washington, clerks whether democratic or repubiicau, profess an everlasting affection f,r 'he party in power. This wise conformity is severely shaken Iiowcwr, nhm brouglit 10 a test like the pief-ent CJise. The voracity of the biblical statement, that a m.tn cannot serve two masters, is by no means equivocal in his instance. It is in point of fact, one of those disagreeable truth?, which we would gladly disprove, hy sophistry, if it were possible tj do. We can all sympa thize with these clerks, but beyond that we arc powerless to act. The democratic campaign committee, have made arrang nients with the railroad companies, for the transportation of democratic clerks, who intended to go home. Only those however who have not exhausted their leave of ab seiuv, will get permisHon to go from the departments. The great and only Hermann, who is correctly termed prestidigitator, neccrom ancor, magitian and wizard, has been spend ing a short season at. the national. It is uo figure of speech to say, that heh.ts suc ceeded in knocking established facts and reasons into acocked bat, nor indeed to ob serve, that the laws of gravitation and at traction have been totally ignored I13 this super natural visitor. His audiences were held spdlbouud by the many wonder ful tiicks, and showed their honest appro elation, b) rounds of applans . On Tues day, Hermann gave an exhibition attho Insane Asylum. Ncfirly every correspon- dent and newspaperman, ir the city was I preseut. The audience was composed of self called kings, queens, .presidents, etc., who at first did no appear to understand the nature of the entertainment. It was not until the great magician had performed several remarkable tricks, like converting cables into cough drops and dumb bells into ten penny nails that their minds ap peard to grasp the idea, and to awaken to a sense of understanding. From this t ime on, the poor creatures evinced appreciation and csthusiastn, showing their approbation by clapping their hands and whistling. Her mann is to be commended for this kind action, which was purely Toiuntary, ai.d wbhout any solicitation. It is an established fact, that the influ ence of theatricals upon the iusane is bene ficial, serving as it unquestionable does, to stimulate the mind, and to b.esk the dull and lethargic state of deranged intellect,, H r in ami's tricks andX:. As j rop -iery d ies n t permit candidates for jueluid offici in this S'atc to j.Icad for their election by speeches or wriring, I beg to say awoi dju behalf f the deiu.eratie candidates on our judkial ticket. Our candidates for Congress, for the legislature tor the office of soli itor and our other ean va'scw have fold you what democnicy has done for the State and why its rule shall hi continued that i.lias settled our StaU debt; that it has d mbled our isib-.ige ot riilway;; (hat it ha given us honest gov crnmenf; that it has rctluced our taxes that it has given us gooi schools, that it has given us peat e at lu-me and respectability abroad, &c, &c. T.ies- facts are all true, and are a'suffL-u-ut reason why democratic offi.ers in all departments shall continue t serve us. Nothin- is more important to any people than a pure, fearless and able judiciary. Such a beiieh we now have in North Carolina and tho voters of the State must see to it that this 1 lessing is continued to us. It u necdleos to do more than pronounce the naiuca of iur candi dates for thu supreme court, the jurists who now constitute that court, Smith. Ashe and Mcrrimon; their integrity, cour age, wisdom and legal learning L? conceded by all. Their industry is a marval to the profession. Nor need anything be sai l in praise of Avery and Graves, who have served many years as superior court judges and arc known and , re: p jcted throughout ur border.--; nor of Counoo, dark, B iykin and Montgomery, whose se.viee has not been so long, but whose praises arc in the mouths of the people in every county in which they have held court. The only candidate wc present, who has not already served on the bench, is James. Merri mon. of Buncombe, asd his high character at home, his ability as displayed in our State senate and his large and successful practice in the mountain counties and in the suprome court are sufabient guaranty of his competency and fitness for the of fice . I would not criticise the gentlemen whose names arc presente 1 as tlu-ir op ponents; but I hazard-nothing in saying that no well informed man should hesitate in making a choice between the two tickets and that s-ome of these gentlemen are un known to the legal profession even out side of the counties wluso courts they -at tend. At one time it seemed, probable that our ticket would have no opposition; but op posing candidates have been named, aud it is the duty of our friends to see if that by no accident, any one of our candidates is defeated. Aud it is due to them from all law loving voters that they be compli mented by the largest vote ever giveu for any candidates in the State. . U. H. Battle, Chm'n. Dem. State Ex. Com. Ackers.
